A no man’s land stretches through the neighboring Russian regions. A terrible war is being fought here between two armies, but also beyond the borders of Ukraine, the conflict is throwing the future, alliances, neighbourliness, belonging and security guarantees of ordinary people into the air.
Frederik Tillitz, Anders Rye Skjoldjensen & Ólafur Steinar Rye Gestsson embark on a journalistic and photographic journey from the Arctic to Central Asia, where they meet the people who inhabit the newly constructed borderland on the edge of Russia – the no-man’s land where the ideas of the West, the East and Russia Mir, The Russian World, collides in the 21st century’s greatest geopolitical crisis yet.
The expedition takes them to Svalbard, Northern Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, from where they depict the fight for the Arctic underground, persecuted sexual minorities, life behind the Ukrainian front line, the uncertain future of the breakaway republics in the Caucasus and new alliances on the steppes of the Stanlands.
