“Inuuteq Storch: John Møller – Mirrored, Portraits of Good Hope” collects 178 photographs of Greenland’s first professional photographer John “Ujuut” Møller, which Greenlandic photographer Inuuteq Storch has selected and carefully processed. The book has a foreword by geologist Minik Rosing, and John “Ujuut” Møller is introduced by researcher at the Greenland National Museum Kirstine Møller. The text of the book runs in parallel in Greenlandic, Danish and English.
For Inuuteq Storch, the book is part of a larger effort to put a new focus on Greenlandic self-presentation and postcolonial awareness of national pride and identity. The works of the two Greenlandic photographers are brought together over a span of more than 100 years and explore the development of place identity seen from the people’s own perspective. Inuuteq Storch grew up in Greenland, where the landscape and weather are dominant, and where nature determines the rhythm of life. But the stories that are told about life in this landscape have traditionally been influenced by Danish travelers and their view of nature and the people. In Inuuteq Storch’s artistic work, he searches for his and other Greenlanders’ own visual narrative.
